The City of Edinburgh's main goal in life is to guarantee that any person who would like to do the world a favor and travel by bike does so only with the constant risk of being involved in a fatal collision.
It does this by painting pictures of bikes at the sides of some roads, and then inviting anyone who wants to to leave a 1000kg heap of shit there for as long as they like, completely unchallenged.
